You ride your own horse the whole way — along the riverbed first, then climbing into the Sierra Madre foothills on the ranch's own trails. It's the kind of horseback riding you simply can't find on the beach in Puerto Vallarta.
The last stretch to the waterfall is on foot: everyone dismounts, crosses a hanging bridge and climbs a stone stairway up the hillside. The walk is short, but the views back over the canyon make it one of the highlights of the tour.
At the top there's time to swim in the pool under the falls and cool off in the river. The return path drops down a sloping hill, so expect a short section where you'll need to move at a light jog.
